About Our Faire Safaris
Do you also want to have a fair safari? African Wildcats Expedition is a project of social involvement on its own. Run by local safari guides it provides decent incomes, local work, and education for 2 Tanzanian families. It fits in the new spirit of modern Tanzania; this local start-up is here to stay! Especially the personal atmosphere improves the organization, the structure, and the quality of the safaris. Thanks to modern techniques –like the internet and email- we skip the layers between the actual safari and the customer, what a relief…
When you go on safari with us, you are sure your money gets to the people who work for it very hard. Their families and communities benefit directly from this fair income. Nothing flies away to investors abroad, or to foreign owners who pay your guide and cook just enough to stay alive.
In our modest small office in Arusha with hand-made local furniture, we can make an appointment with you. But our comfort zone is and will be the Serengeti!
Responsible Travel Involvement
Trees against erosion
Due to dry years with hardly any rainfall combined with heavy rainfall in a short period, the soil is aggressively washed away. This process is accelerated by cutting trees for charcoal and houses. The population of resident people has grown in the last decades and the fight against erosion is still young. We have to teach especially young people to replace trees when wood is harvested; soil that disappeared will not come back by itself. Planting young trees in the wet season is one solution; we can repair the soil layer in combination with water control during heavy rainfalls. Every safari will get its own donated AWE tree in the valley where John Sung’are lives.
Stop Poaching
Every day elephants and rhinos are still killed!! African Wildcat Expeditions Ltd is looking for a local person, who is personally involved in the fight against poaching. We will follow this person from time to time. When we have found this man/woman we keep you posted.

Matonyok Children’s Home

“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the World”
Nelson Mandela
Matonyok was founded by a Maasai named Emma Sitayo. In the early 1970s, she was the only girl in her village to receive an education. Emma knows at first hand the importance of having an education to be successful and reach one’s potential in life. During her career as a nurse working with children with special needs she regularly came across children being ‘abandoned’ either as a result of their disability or social/economic family issues. She herself could not ‘abandon’ these children in need and so kept ‘bringing them home’ – and, as a result, Matonyok Children’s Home was born. Emma continues to this day to accept referrals from the Government’s Social Work Department. The Home does not receive any financial assistance as a result of accepting these children.

Mission:
To ensure disabled orphans, street children and children from difficult circumstances enjoy a full and decent life. We believe every child should be given the opportunity to achieve a greater degree of self – reliance and social integration in a dignified manner.
Objectives:
- To identify those areas where children’s rights are violated
- To inspire and help the community to educate
- To develop each Matonyok child’s personal talents in line with their mental and physical abilities
- To prepare the children at Matonyok for an active adult life in a free society
- To set and attain development goals for the Home and its children
Matonyok has committed itself to helping children who are neglected, orphaned, sexually abused, whose parents have died as a result of HIV/Aids etc
Volunteers:
We welcome and accept volunteers from all over the world to come and work with us in serving the community and building a better life for our children. You can volunteer to teach, spend time with the children and so much more.
Our Involvement to Matonyok Children’s Home
How does African Wildcats Expeditions get in touch with Matonyok Children’s home, we first knew Matonyok children’s home and Emma through Edel and Arip, Edel she is an Ireland lady, a suppoter of Matonyok children’s home. We are enthusiastic and motivated by the way of her supports. African Wildcats Expeditions we love Children’s and we want to help them. How are we support the project, we support the project by funds and teaching material. We have also setup a day or hours on our safaris Itineraries for our clients to visit children’s home. You can bring school material, like writing books, reading books, pencils, erasers etc.
African Wild Cats Reviews on Tripadvisor
Elin RThis is the experience of a lifetime! We got back from our safari-trip two weeks ago and it is still impossible to completely process the experience. Our amazing guide Jacob found us the sweetest spots for wildlife-watching, always knew where to find the animals (without a com-radio by the way) and where to place the car for the best view and he did everything with a deep respect for the animals. Jacob is a local guy with great knowledge not only about the animals but also about the history and culture of the Maasai. For our first day I thought we would drive directly to our lodge, and I did not expect any game drive. But sure enough, right away we had lions, elephants, hippos and giraffe. I was blown away! We opted for a package deal and Jacob arranged the accommodation for us. The lodges we stayed at were really comfortable tentlodges with a luxurious feel to them and the food was great. Sleeping right in the Serengeti national park was awesome, and not as scary as it may sound! The coming days we had beautiful encounters: a big family of 21 elephants all by ourselves, met a hippo walking out of water, saw cheeta, hyena, leopard and lions, to name a few. Thanks to Jacobs guidingskills we got to meet many animals without the big crowds (when lions are close to the road there can be more than 10 cars there at the same time trying to get a look at the animals). I think the very best experience would be the big family of elephants, or having breakfast with 6 resting lions without any other cars around (it´s hard to choose). We had 4 days in Serengeti and 1 day in the Ngorongoro crater. In hindsight we should have had more days. Thank you Jacob and African Wildcats Expeditions, we will be back! Mod33BEpic Safari Adventures There are not enough superlatives to accurately describe how fantastic a African Wildcats Expeditions safari truly is. This is my second time travelling with the company, and should I have the good fortune to return to Tanzania again, it will not the last. For the eleven nights/twelve days spent in country my wife and I did not worry about a thing as they arranged the entire trip. This included JRO airport pickup and drop-off, securing our lodging, and arranging special cultural experiences. Operated by local, multi-lingual guides, African Wildcats provides a highly personalized, authentic experience that quickly makes one feel more like a welcomed visitor rather than a faceless tourist. Their detailed knowledge of animals, birds, flora, and fauna is extremely impressive; as is their ability to navigate the large, and occasionally challenging terrain of this rugged, beautiful land. Jacob, our driver and guide for the duration of the trip, went out of his way to make sure that our safari was everything we wanted it to be and more. Our adventures and encounters were far too numerous to document in this forum, but some of the highlights include: A walking safari in Arusha National Park trekking alongside creatures of this land, such as baboons, monkeys, cape buffalo, warthogs, and a very cool tower of giraffe. Elephants of all sizes, birds of prey, and the ancient Baobab trees of Tarangire National Park. A male and female lion sleeping in a roadside tree, oblivious to the photo seeking paparazzi below. The sight and sounds of between 100-200 hundred hippos trying to stay cool in the pool formed where the Seronera and Orangi rivers converge. Being within meters of the “other” big cats of the Serengeti including leopards, cheetahs, and some of the cutest lion cubs one could hope to see. Being blessed to observe a dozen, highly endangered, Black rhinos in Ngorongoro Crater. (Including a baby!) Tagging along on a morning hunt with Hadzabe tribal members, marveling at the blacksmith skills of the Datoga, and hiking over hill and dale with our personal Maasai guide to visit a local village. …and if I had to pick a favorite; Enjoying coffee and picnic breakfast (in our vehicle) smack in the middle of the great wildebeest migration. I realize that many see this as a potentially exciting, yet daunting trip, likely to be deemed inaccessible for most people due to potential unknowns and preconceived notions. Let me say, without a doubt, there is nothing to fear and that African Wildcats is the perfect company to turn one’s African safari dream into the experience of a lifetime. In short, trust in the AW team to work their magic. Booking with them was one of the best decisions I have ever made I hope that this brief review will encourage others to do the same. Asante sana! (All photos taken with Samsung S21 Ultra 5G) Murielle CThe best safari with the best guides John and Joseph organised the best safari through différent parks : the best Serengeti and Ngogorro !!! They know how to find the animals … they gave us their knowledge about animals and Massaii culture. We enjoy this trip with my kids -18 - 21 and the kids of our friends -15 -18. Thanks for this mémorable safari… Tanzanie is a really beautiful country. Anna RMost special safari experience ever! We as a family of five got an amazing safari experience guided by John. He gave us a personalized safari trip through Tanzania for 12 days long. African Wildcats is a company that is well known in Tanzania and is only guided by very experienced guides. You can ask them anything to make your trip as personalized as possible. We loved how much we got to know about the wild animals and the different tribes we got to visit. Most wonderful experience ever!! Really recommend it! BPMBOBAmazing – Asante Sana :) What an amazing 4 nights, 5 days Serengeti & Ngorongoro Safari we had with African Wildcats this December 2020. We are so grateful for their depth of knowledge, experience and attention to detail. It was such a special and memorable trip seeing all the many animals up close … not just the Big 5 but many more and learning more about Tanzanian and Maasai culture, not to mention awesome food, accommodation and great ´craic´ as we say in Ireland. We look forward so much to visiting again in the future. Sara & Brendan – Dublin, Ireland nessievaOne of the best holidays ever :) In the end of September/ begin of October we hiked Kilimanjaro (7 days) and went to the Monduli juu Camp, the Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater (7 days) and it was the best decision to book this trip with African Wildcats Expeditions. Jacob is a professional and did an amazing job creating this individual trip for us. The communication was easy and fast and the prices were really fair. In advance we received a really good gear list, so we were perfectly prepared. African Wildcats did everything to make our holiday perfect and actually it was even better than that. Tripadvisor rating score: 5.0 of 5, based on 16 reviews
Meet Our Team
African Wildcats Expeditions is an initiative of Jacob Loserian, John Sung’are and Steve and Astrid Somers. Jacob and John are safari guides for almost 25 years in the northern circuit of Tanzania; Steve and Astrid are veterinarians who own and run two veterinary clinics in Utrecht and Woerden (centre of the Netherlands). John and Jacob were already planning to start their own safari company for a while, when they ran into Steve and Astrid. Their enthusiasm and positive drive convinced Steve and Astrid that they could organize better safaris for an attractive rate. Profit stays with the guides, instead of leaving them depending on tips. We don’t have a big hierarchic back office; just a small office and a good structure to organize your safari. We want to be a small safari company, run by the guides, which can compete with the big companies in quality and price. The African Wildcats Expeditions Ltd gives safari business a new boost!
Jacob Loserian
director
The life story of Jacob is special; born and raised as a traditional Masai, he started working in the tanzanite-mines* for years. Working as a night guard (ascari) at a safari company he studied English and got his safari guide diploma. In the mean time he also worked as a mechanic at the same company. This man has got it all! Jacob is working hard to pay for the study of his 4 children and is hoping that the “Wildcats” will be a succes. He is a caring, friendly person and his laugh and sense of humour are contagious. His knowledge of the “bush” is phenomenal. *tanzanite is a rare blue gemstone, only found in a small area nearby Kilimanjaro-airport;
John Sung’are
co-founder
John is also a Masai and the son of a former member of parliament; he lives on his modest farm in a beautiful valley between Monduli and Arusha. John is married and has 4 children, in the age of 6 to 20 years. He joined the “Wildcats” because he wants to create his own future in modern Tanzania. In the safari world everybody knows John and John knows everybody; but on safari he has only one goal: to make you want to come back! He knows all the secret hide-a-ways of the big cats: ”I smell a lion”. After a while we see these big cats lying in the grass
Steef Somers
Steve Somers is a Dutch veterinarian with a passion for Africa. He learned to get around in Africa on a motorcycle on his trips to Dakar (Senegal). Travelling in Africa you need to have a certain attitude to solve problems along the way. On the other hand he learned to organize in the 2 veterinary clinics which he runs with his wife Astrid in the Netherlands. Their 4 sons (22-26) try to keep him young in snowboarding and windsurfing. Although loosing already, he got his moments… His love for Africa combines photography and wildlife in an unbelievable setting. That’s what the “Wildcats” is about.
Astrid Somers
Astrid Somers is a “born” vet, she is enjoying the nature of the Tanzanian parks in every way. Been on safari with her family several times, she wants you to see with your own eyes the unspoiled Serengeti and the impressive highland woods of Arusha National park. Yes, she doesn’t just want to drive around, but also explores the parks by foot. Or visits a real native village far beyond the touristic sites…. When Astrid and Steve met John and Jacob a dream came through: “building an African company with the right people in a tremendous atmosphere”.
